Last year in December 2022 we hosted our first Christmas lunch which was hosted on 25th December by Sylvester. As you all know the month of December and Christmas can be one of the loneliest time of the year for some people and the idea behind this was of course to bring people together to make it a more happy time of the year and due to the kindness of the community of Swindon we were able to achieve this and made it a day for everyone to remember by not just serving hot food all day but also by sharing presents.
This year 2023, We are looking forward to hosting yet another one on December 25th which will be hosted by Sylvester Okoli and sponsored by Route 8 Barbers. For us we always feel that we are the community where we want people to come together and our Barbers in Swindon and Barbers in Bristol and always looking at ways we can keep the spirit of the community alive. Our Christmas lunch will be in Swindon this year but we are hoping to extend it to Bristol as time goes on.

For most of us the period of December will mean shopping, parties and many more but for a lot of people it’s a time of sadness where they miss those ones they love taken away from us but lets not forget the true meaning of Christmas, The birth of Christ and a time Love came into the world and to this effect we share that Gods love to us mankind by sharing with those who can not afford It or be with their loved ones.

Times are hard and a lot of people will be hit with poverty this year, no gift to open, not even a meal to have or a family to share it with and they isolation they will face. Our elderly been left on their own through a death of a spouse or their children living far away and this things can be hard. I lost my parents when I was 12years in Nigeria and came to England at 15 and Christmas has never been the same and it always leaves that space empty because loneliness can be damaging and most of us die lonely and I believe having this Christmas lunch does help to extend that bit of love to individuals that live in our community.

We ought to look out for our neighbours, elderly and even strangers not because it makes us feel good but because it’s the right thing to do . not just in December but of course through out the year and this is why our barbers is not just for cutting hair but a place where we see the problems that we face in life and look for ways we can do what we can to make it better, We must remember we are called to be of service to one another and only through that do we find true joy and happiness as its our duty.

Our Christmas day lunch will be a welcoming place for anyone and everyone. It will be held on 25th December and will serve 3 course meals and lots of drinks and coffee and we always look forward to welcome the lonely, homeless, elderly and anyone struggling because that’s the spirit of Christmas.

One question I get asked most of the time from our Students training to be a barber in our Barbers in Swindon or Barbers in Bradley Stoke and Barbers in Emersons Green is … What are the right tools ?. Now while that is always the right question, its also important to ask yourself what you will feel comfortable with. While I always remind students training to become barbers to get the right tools I also have to bear in mind about cost.
I personally have used Wahl for all my barbering years and never diverted because it was what I felt comfortable using and although there are other options but as the saying goes, Its good to stick to what you know. While of course there are many sites you can purchase this clippers my advise is to use the Wahl official website or Amazon just because of the return policy which means if anything is wrong or your clipper is damaged then you can easily return it within the days set out in the policy.

Below we will list out what is needed or shall we say tools needed to become a barber.

Clippers

Clippers are very essential barber tool. Anyone looking to become a barber must include clippers in their budget. Clippers work hand in hand with scissors to provide a smooth finish result.

We are now in modern times and most clippers used in barbershop are cordless which means you can charge them and use them up to an hour.

The price you spend on a clipper depends on you but my advise is to always get the Wahl magic cordless clippers and this comes with most of the guards needed for your haircut

Trimmers

Trimmers are very essential for detailing work in every aspect of barbering, It is used to line up edges and produce a cleaner end result. Every barber needs to have a trimmer to finish their work. Trimmer is used on beard and at the same time to refine details.

Again depending on your budget there are different types of trimmers but my recommendation will be the Wahl 5 star Cordless trimmer or the Babyliss.

Disinfectants/Cleaning Oil

Now this is very important. Think about it for a second, Everyone who walks into your shop comes from a different house hold so its very important to make sure your tools are cleaned after each customer. There are 2 main cleaning products that is recommended.

Barbercide

This is mainly used by barbers to disinfect all their tools and most barbershop should have this in their shops for their combs, guards etc.

Clippercide

Now this Blows the hair out between the teeth of the clippers while cleaning at the same time. While its not advised to used barbercide on your clippers due to it's liquid form, A clippercide will be a better option to use and advised to be used after each customers.

Blade Oil

This is used to oil your clippers and must be done regularly in order to ensure it works properly and last long

Hair Dryer

Hair dryer is what is used to dry clients hair after scissors work has been done, Its also used to remove excess hair from customers shoulders while cutting to maintain a clean working speace,

Any make is fine , I believe mine was just a make I got from Amazon and has lasted me months. Again you can spend as much as you want on this barbers tools but bear in mind, it can also be damaged at anytime.

Scissors

These are hand operated barber tools or shearing device consisting of metal blades that are sharp at both edges. They are very important tool needed to become a barber as they work in line with the clippers.

Now scissors can be very expensive and can be as little as £15 to £1500 or even over but again I will advise to shop around and remember some of this tools can break or lost at times so spend very sensibly.

Cut throat razor

This are tools used to sharpen lines or beard. Although the trimmer does this when you do your detailing work but this makes the finish more sharper and detailed.

Thinning Scissors

Now you will come across customers that might talk about their hair thickness and how they don’t like it, This is where your thinning scissors come into use . It is used to take the thickness of the hair out and very useful barber tools.

Brush/ Duster brush

This normally comes with a hard handle made of wire or bristles. The idea of this is to help brush off any unwanted hair on customers shoulders, round the ears etc. It helps to keep a clean working area and using it frequently means you can see your work. Both ideally does the same thing but please do buy both as one is better when fading and other is better when you have completed your haircut and don’t want customer walking out with hair around them.

Shavers

Foil shavers are used specifically for skin fades or to make a part of the skin smoother, Over the years it has replaced razor blades as a safer method of doing fades which reduces the risks of cuts,

There a 2 I recommend, The Wahl or the Andis and they range from £70 to £100 in price.

Combs

Now you can have as many as you want when it comes to combs, They are cheap and comes in different sizes.

Styling products

Styling products always will depend on what you have tried and feel you can advise your customer on. This include gel, wax and many more.

Last week I started his journey to visit prisons around the country and will continue through out the year, by doing this we are able to see and learn the impact that services like this, which also offers training and opportunities for individuals who want to change their life and become better people in the communities, have on prisoners.

Route 8 barbers aim is to support these prisoners and advice them on how they can find work or even start their own business by offering our support.

Are there barbershops/hairdressers in prison?

The resounding answer to that is Yes, in fact these places offers prisoners the opportunity to train to be qualified barbers/hairdressers by gaining level 2 and level 3 certification and they have opportunity to use these qualification to either work for someone or set up their own business. Now of course you might ask how is that possible? It's simple, Prisoners have the morning and the afternoon to learn, while some prisons will offer different learning options according to their regime. Most prisons offer prisons the opportunity to use both morning and afternoon sessions to study which means they are able to learn quicker and get their qualifications quicker. This training have also been praised by prison bosses who believe teaching inmates to cut hair should reduce the risk of them re offending because it gives them the opportunity to start again.

Most of these courses run at category C prisons that houses offenders aged 25 and under, they have seen improvements when people gets released. Everyone should be given a second chance and what it does is give people opportunities to rethink. Prisoners just don't learn about cutting hair as we saw when we visited HMP Nottingham, HMP Winchester and HMP Sodbury but they also learn patience, looking at life differently and to make a purposeful life upon release.

Now of course no one is saying that everyone can be saved through this but if once person in different communities can change then the effects on the community as a whole is always greater Sue Taylor tells us more through her interview with The Modern Barber Magazine .

How does an individual training learn?

Most prisons have individuals offering this services on their wings which mean they can put into practise what they are learning or prisoners who wants to get a haircut can make an appointments with the main prison barbershops, where the individuals training are allowed to practice.

I had the privilege to sit through few of this haircuts and was actually amazed to how great they were and the passion some of this guys put into their work.

Does it work?

Of course for those who really want to change and do something meaningful. There are numerous stories of individuals who changed their lives through barbering and continue to do so. Now I am one of them, I made a mistake and took the wrong path in life which ended me in prison, although I didn't learn barbering in prison but I am able to be in the position where I can offer individuals opportunities to change their lives through our shops and as we keep expanding.

Through barbering I am able to give back to the community and put barbers in Swindon and barbers in Bristol that can use our barbershops to train young ones so they can keep in the right path and away from crime, our barbers in Swindon has always given hope to individuals who feel lost since it opened in 2017 and we continue to do that by using our barbers in Bristol.

Some of this kids are lost and just need to be shown a path back and we will continue to do that and here is a story of someone who has changed their life too A clear cut career choice – training to become a barber whilst in prison

How to Make Wavy Hair Curly

Ah, the hair care classics. Every girl with curly or wavy hair wrestles with this one―the

dilemma of beachy waves versus defined curls. Unfortunately, you can't decide whether to

embrace your waves or tame your curls, so you usually do both―and then end up with some

parts that look great while others do not.

There are several ways to make wavy hair curlier, but today I'm going to focus on the eleven

methods you can use at home. If your hair is naturally wavy and you're reading this post

because your wave pattern isn't as defined as you would like, don't worry because help is

near.

Scrunch after rinsing out.

The best way to make your curls look how you want them to is by scrunching in the water

that is still inside your hair when wet. To do this, separate your hair into sections and scrunch

each section firmly with both hands, lifting it and allowing the water to drip out as you do so.

Please keep your fingers together as you cup your hair, so they can help press the water out.

Scrunching helps define curls by encouraging the hairs cuticle to lie flat. It has been proven

that long-term scratching is good for everyone - keep combing every part of the hair until

almost all the water is gone. If you have a lot of hair, it may take some time.

Even if you don't have naturally curly hair, scrunching your hair when wet can help it form

more curls. I've noticed that if I don't scrunch my hair enough when it is wet, then when it

dries, the waves/curls aren't as defined as they could be!

Use a lightweight daily conditioner

If you're going for that tousled beachy wave look, don't make it hard on yourself by using a

heavy conditioner. Conditioner is a great way to bring out your hairs natural style and

shape—and it can also be an excellent way to add the shine back in after you shampoo. But if

your hair is fine, your conditioner could weigh it down and make it too thick to curl correctly.

To get those waves, try applying a lightweight daily conditioner to the mid-shafts and ends of

your hair after you've shampooed. A deep conditioning treatment is better for coarse or thick

hair, but for those with a more delicate texture, this will give you the moisture you need

without weighing your hair down or making it heavy. The result? Natural-looking curls that

last all day long.

Take heat protection when using a dryer

I know it's tempting to grab your hair dryer or curling iron and start working on your curls as

soon as you step out of the shower, but if you wait a few minutes after you towel dry, spray

your hair with a heat protectant, and brush through your curls, you'll save yourself tons of

trouble down the line.

Heat protectants help keep your hair healthy by preventing damage from heat styling tools.

When your hair is wet, it's very vulnerable to damage from heat styling—and unfortunately,

it's the easiest time for your hair to be damaged by heat. After that, your hair is soaked in

water, making it more pliable and fragile than usual.

This is especially important for curly girls because we have a lot more to lose regarding our

hair. If we use heat tools too much, our natural curl pattern can become damaged, and we

could end up with straight hair (or at least less curly hair) that's harder to manage.

In general, you should avoid heat styling tools as much as possible to promote your hair

health.

Use a diffuser to make your hair curlier.

A diffuser is a tool that helps distribute the air blown through it. It's used to create volume

and curls. Using a diffuser can help make your hair more curly by wrapping around each

strand, creating lift at the root.

When using a diffuser, remember these tips:

● Use low-heat settings on your blow dryer - this will keep your hair from getting too

hot and making it frizzy; we recommend temperatures between 350-400F degrees

(180C).

● Do not point the air directly at your head - instead, aim it at an angle so that it will hit

all of your hair with some airflow (and not just one section).

Use bobby pins to make your hair curlier.

Bobby pins are a great tool to use on wavy hair. They'll help you create a few curls if that's

what you want to do.

Just grab your bobby pins and hold them in place while letting your hair dry. Once it's dry,

remove the bobby pins, and voila! You've got some curls!

Use a hair mask.

There are plenty of hair masks out there that are specifically designed for curly hair. If you

have wavy hair and want to make it curlier, this is the perfect option!

Hair masks further hydrate your hair which helps in curling hair. In addition, using a hair

mask reduces the weight of your hair and keeps it curly. So use a hair mask once a week.

Don't be afraid to spend a little more on your mask; it's worth it in the end! My favorite mask

is from Lush Cosmetics and smells like lavender vanilla cupcakes. It also leaves my curly

locks feeling silky smooth after each use.

Like most products at Lush, this one is made with natural ingredients that do not contain

parabens or sodium lauryl sulfates (which can irritate).

The next time you're feeling adventurous with your beauty routine, give one of these curl-

enhancing treatments a try!

Use scrunch products

Scrunching is a great way to create curls in your hair. You can scrunch with gel, mousse, or a

leave-in conditioner. All these products will help lift your hair and hold it in place.

Wet hair is the perfect time to apply the product because it soaks in better than dry hair. Also,

when your hair is wet, it's at its most malleable state, making it easier to bring out its natural

bounce by scrunching products into it.

You'll want to scrunch the product into your hair to separate the curls and lift them—making

your hair look more voluminous and healthy.

You can also scrunch in products while you're upside down to encourage your curls to form

upward instead of downward.

If you're worried about how scrunching might affect your hair, try it on a few strands before

applying the product all over.

But don't worry too much! Products formulated for curly hair won't leave it crunchy or stiff..

Plop your hair after a shower.

Plopping your hair after a shower can help the curls to form. What is plopping? It’s simply

wrapping your damp hair in a towel and letting it sit for 5-10 minutes. The extra moisture

from the shower will help create more curls, and you don’t need to worry about any product

on your clothes or bedding.

Using a blow dryer or diffuser attachment may be tempting, so your hair dries faster, but wait

until later! Your curls will stay longer if they have time to set while still damp—plop until

they are dry enough not to drip water onto anything else.

Try finger coiling to encourage curls.

Finger coiling is a simple technique to encourage curls in your hair. The process involves

twisting sections of hair around your finger and then securing them with a small elastic band

or claw clip.

You can also use a hair dryer to speed up the drying process, though be careful not to hold it

too close because this will damage your hair. When you remove the band or clip, use a brush

to separate the curls, so they don't stick together.

Cut or trim your hair regularly.

If you don't trim your hair, it will only grow longer and get damaged. Hair grows at an

average rate of half an inch per month, so if you allow your hair to grow for six months

without trimming it, then expect to have a pen-size chunk of new growth at the end of that

time—and the chances are that this new growth won't be in the shape or style that works best

for you.

All hairs on our bodies have a cycle where they grow and rest before growing again (called

the "anagen phase"). But different hair types grow at different rates—some are slow growers

while others are fast growers. For example, beard stubble is usually one of the fastest-

growing parts of our bodies because it has less density than other areas like eyelashes or leg

hair; but eyebrows can take up to 5 years just to reach their full length!

What does this mean for wavy-haired people? Well... In general terms, we should probably

keep our tresses short enough not to disrupt any natural curls (which tend toward fizziness)

but long enough to look presentable at all times!

significant changes. If you have the time and money to experiment with expensive treatments

like keratin, have at it!

However, if you're looking for something easier and more immediate, consider heat - an

Heat is often frowned upon in our community because we associate it with damage that can't

easily be undone. But if you're looking for an easy fix and aren't invested in your natural curl

pattern, you might find that heat works great for you in the short term.

I'm not personally on board with using heat this way all the time, but it's a valid option if

you're looking for something temporary. There are tons of curling iron types out there and

different techniques. You can use heat to create the pattern you want, when you want, with
